A Face of Commitment, a Community United

The room erupted in applause the moment his name was announced. In that instant, it was clear that Afonso Meka was a choice made from the heart. Named the recipient of the 2025 Community Faces Award, Afonso was selected by the community for his unwavering dedication, natural leadership, and the meaningful impact he has on those around him.

A quiet yet essential presence, Afonso leads through action. His selfless contributions most notably through the Bilanaga Project, our community garden dedicated to addressing food insecurity reflect a simple but powerful belief: real change begins at the local level. One garden bed, one shared meal, one act of kindness at a time, he has shown what community care truly looks like.

This award serves as a powerful reminder that you don’t have to wait to become a hero in your community. Choosing a cause, showing up, and supporting others can make a lasting difference. When people come together with purpose, communities grow stronger.

Inspired by Afonso Meka’s example, we now look ahead with anticipation. Who will be the face of community impact in 2026? One thing is certain, so long as leaders like Afonso continue to step forward, compassion, solidarity, and hope will always have a place to thrive.

Mansia.
