WA — In a vibrant fusion of creativity and mental health advocacy, a local youth program is harnessing the transformative power of art to foster resilience and connection among young people.
Last week’s session, part of an ongoing weekly initiative, saw participants channeling emotions into canvas paintings during a workshop designed to amplify self-expression and healing. The program, which gained momentum during last year’s Refugees and Immigrants Week, has become a cornerstone for youth grappling with trauma, displacement, and identity.
“Art isn’t just about color or technique—it’s a language,” said one organizer. “These kids are painting their stories, fears, and hopes in ways words often can’t capture.” Attendees described the sessions as a safe space to process complex emotions, with many citing newfound confidence and camaraderie.

The initiative aligns with growing evidence supporting art therapy’s efficacy. Studies show creative expression can reduce anxiety, improve emotional regulation, and strengthen community bonds—a reality visible in the laughter and focus filling the room last Thursday.
“I didn’t realize how much I needed this,” shared a 16-year-old participant, brushing strokes of blue and gold onto her canvas. “It’s like… my heart finally found a voice.”
Organizers credit community support for the program’s success, urging locals to join future sessions. “Healing isn’t a solo journey,” said one volunteer. “When we create together, we heal together.”
