Healing Circle Report – July 25th

On July 25th, over 40 community members gathered for an unforgettable Healing Circle, a deeply moving and transformative event that fostered connection, healing, and unity. This powerful gathering brought together individuals from over nine different countries, including Nigeria, the United States, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, and the Philippines, each bringing their unique stories and experiences to the circle.

A Sanctuary for Healing and Connection

The Healing Circle was more than just a meeting; it was a sacred space where refugees and immigrant families could come together to process and heal from past traumatic experiences caused by war and conflicts. It served as a bridge between generations, strengthening family bonds and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.

From the moment attendees arrived, there was a palpable sense of warmth and openness. The event began with housekeeping details, setting the stage for an evening of introspection, sharing, and growth. The Bahá’í community led an icebreaker activity filled with rhythmic hand-clapping music, instantly energizing the room and helping participants feel comfortable engaging in the activities ahead.

The African Lamp: A Symbol of Strength and Resilience

At the heart of our gathering stood an African lamp—an object so simple yet profoundly significant. As the talking piece for our circle, the lamp ignited stories of survival, perseverance, and hope. Many participants shared that this lamp was their only source of light during their childhoods back home, symbolizing both literal and figurative illumination in their lives.

One woman recounted how, without electricity in her village, this lamp allowed her to complete her education, enabling her to read and study long after the sun had set. Her story resonated with many in the circle, drawing tears and nods of understanding. The lamp became a metaphor for resilience—the ability to find light even in the darkest of times. Through shared reflections, participants connected over their struggles and triumphs, recognizing their collective strength.

Identifying Our Strengths

Guided by our mental health therapist, we embarked on an introspective exercise to identify the sources of our strength. For many, their families’ well-being was their greatest source of joy and resilience. The goal of this exercise was to remind each person that even during life's hardships, they possess what truly matters.

To bring this realization to life, we engaged in a creative drawing activity. Participants, young and old alike, eagerly took to the floor, illustrating their personal sources of strength. It was a beautiful sight—adults and children expressing themselves through art, lost in their creative process. This simple yet powerful activity brought laughter, deep contemplation, and a renewed sense of gratitude.

A Song of Unity and Love

As the evening progressed, the Bahá’í community once again led us in song. With the gentle strumming of a guitar, we learned a melody of unity and love. Voices blended harmoniously, creating an atmosphere of peace and togetherness. It was a moment of pure joy—music transcended language barriers, weaving a thread of connection among us all.

A Message of Divine Light

Before closing, we reflected on a powerful quote:

“O Son of Being! Thou art My lamp and My light is in thee. Get thou from it thy radiance and seek none other than Me. For I have created thee rich and have bountifully shed My favor upon thee.”

This message served as a gentle reminder that we all carry light within us, no matter our hardships. It was a sentiment that deeply touched our hearts and reaffirmed the purpose of our gathering.

A Taste of Home and Comfort

The evening concluded with a delicious traditional Congolese meal, a celebration of culture and shared experiences. Laughter and conversation filled the room as people connected on a personal level, strengthening the bonds formed throughout the night. As a final gesture of comfort, we distributed free stuffed animals—small tokens of warmth and solace, especially for those who needed an extra reminder of love and support.

A Night to Remember

The Healing Circle was not just an event—it was a transformative experience. Attendees left feeling lighter, more connected, and empowered to continue their journeys of healing. Many expressed that they hadn’t felt this happy and supported in a long time. This gathering reinforced that even in moments of darkness, we are never alone. Together, we find strength, love, and healing.

The impact of this night will linger in our hearts, a beacon of light guiding us forward. Until the next Healing Circle, may we continue to uplift, support, and heal—one story, one song, and one connection at a time.
